May 2012 – From The President

by Ed Robold

Spring has come early and I am sure you have all been out mowing and dodging the occasional frost and flying insects. The trees are budding, blooming and leafing out; those of us with allergies know spring is here.

In March, Randy Sanders showed us what is involved in getting trees down and cut. He showed us there is a lot more to harvesting wood than most of us knew. This month, at our May 12 meeting, we will hear from Jim Baumgardner about what is new in tools this year.

No matter if you’ve been in woodworking forever or have just started, learning about ways to save time, money or labor is interesting to all of us. Jim, the owner of our local Woodcraft store, will again bring us some inside information on the tools of our craft.

There is no time to lose; it will be Christmas again before we know it! Don’t forget to make the toys you vowed to make when you saw the great assortment of toys made by your fellow woodworkers at the Christmas party. The early spring low humidity and warm days are ideal for getting finishes to dry.

If you have something to show the group, please bring it for show and tell. This is a favorite part of every meeting and we all enjoy seeing what others are making.

January 2012 – From the President

by Ed Robold

Wow, here it is January, where did last year go? We had a great year in 2011. We turned in over 1800 toys at the Christmas party and I believe everyone had a great time.

Now we need to look ahead to 2012. We have our work cut out for the club. Those who make toys know that Christmas 2012 will be here before we know it, so start making those toys now. Avoid the rush and stress of waiting till the last minute.

Our members have volunteered to construct a podium for the church. We have been asked to help restore or conceal some damage caused by squirrels at our meeting site, the Spring Rd. Church of Christ. Several of our members are working weekly to construct dressers for the Furniture Bank. We have members making parts for the booth at the State Fair in the summer. I am sure more projects will surface so stay alert for something that may peak your interest. Get involved and support the club.

Speaking of the fair, soon it will be time for the booth at the fairgrounds during the February woodshow. I’m sure we will need volunteers for setup, operation and tear down. We are also looking for a chairperson to take over the coordination of the woodshow booth. If you are interested, please check with Jim Bossenbroek.

Oh, did I forget, we have a meeting soon! Yes, the first meeting of 2012. Man, it is hard to type 2012. We will have as our guest, Eric Matson, Director of the fine woodworking program at the University of Rio Grande in Rio Grande, Ohio. We will find out how this institution develops students into craftsman and artisans who create fine furniture. The program should be interesting and informative.

Hey, just because we are hosting a professional instructor from a noted institution, is no reason not to bring in your projects. Our members really enjoy seeing what you make. We all learn from and enjoy seeing what you are working on. So, please bring in a project that you have finished or are working on. Simple or complex, bring it in! You are among friends and you might be surprised how many others are interested in your project and the techniques used to make it.

Holiday Toy Program 2011

by Mike Quinn

Once again we’ve finished the year with another successful Holiday Toy Program. As a result of your generous efforts we donated over 1800 toys to organizations who distributed them to needy children at Christmastime. The actual final number of toys donated was 1820, very close to last year’s record total of 1830.

Because of the tremendous output of our toymakers we were able to extend our giving to more organizations this year. In addition to our old standbys – Salvation Army, St. Vincent’s Family Center, Gladden Community House, Alpha Athletic Club and Kids n’ Kamp – we also made toy donations to Fisher House at Wright Patterson AFB and to the NBC4/Firefighters for Kids Toy Drive. To experience the warm gratitude of the recipients of our toys is one of the great benefits of being involved with this program.

The following Club members made toys this year:

Marion Ackerman Gordon Correia Mary Kay Marsh Mike Quinn Jim Shaffer
Chris Amatos Wayne Cuthbert Mike McIntee Tom Quertinmont Mike Simpson
Ben Bennett Ivan Dangler Dan McIver Ed Razler Larry Smith
Gary Bogart Bob Engle Bill Miller Ed Robold Dan Strohecker
Les Brinkley Leon Gage Bob Morrison Keith Rogers Mike Totsch
Chuck Carrana Lou Gatch Chuck Murray Glen Rudie Jim Walters
Dave Chenault Ron Grady Rich Peterson Steve Sattler Rosie Wendt
Bob Cole John Herrel Ross Petitto Aaron Seipel Don Wenzlik

Thanks to all of you for your tremendous efforts in 2011!

Now, it’s not too early to begin thinking about what toys YOU will make this year. In spite of our near record output, only about 40 members participated, well down from the 59 who participated last year. The Holiday Toy Program is one of the signature community service projects of our Club and for it to be sustaining we must always be getting more and new people involved. If you’ve made toys in the past and couldn’t do it this year for whatever reason, please consider helping out again in 2012. If you’ve never made toys or are a new member who doesn’t quite know how to get started we’d be happy to help by providing plans, instructions, or getting you connected with a toymaking group. Contact Dan Strohecker or myself for more information.

Dresser-building for Families in Need

by Mike Quinn

Our WOCO volunteer activities at the Furniture Bank continue with about 24 members working on either Tuesday or Wednesday and a few who work on both days. Dresser production is in full swing and getting better as we learn how to become more efficient in our operations. In 2011, as a group, we have manufactured more than 750 dressers and have logged more than 5000 volunteer hours. This is a tremendous achievement, especially considering that we started the year just beginning to implement the new design and process. Special thanks to Lou Gatch, John Herrel, Dave Chenault for their tireless efforts and to all our good people who volunteer.

In 2012 we intend to produce 1000 or more dressers and also to begin construction of bedframes with a goal of 1000 as well. To do this we need more volunteers, probably to work on Mondays. If you are able to work either one day or more every week or only once in a while, we’d love to have you join our WOCO volunteer team. Please contact me at mikequinn@columbus.rr.com and we’ll get you set up.

We submitted an application for the Minwax® Community Craftsman Award in December, highlighting our dresser project at the Furniture Bank. This award is given annually to an individual or group in recognition of their use of woodworking skills for the betterment of the community. Top prize is a substantial cash award, a supply of Minwax® products and a presentation by their top finishing expert. While winning this award is surely a longshot, we believe that our activities at the Furniture Bank are kind of unique and worthy of consideration. Recipient of the award will be announced in the Spring.

Library Update – Jan 2012

by Joe Zagula

WOCO Librarian John Herrel is working to update and maintain WOCO’s lending library – a wealth of resources for WOCO members. This is an enormous task.

If you have any books out or if you would like to donate items for the library, please see John at the January meeting so all book records can be verified. Thanks!
